William Shakespeare Abridged

William Shakespeare Abridged

Our friend, Ian Harkins, is a brilliant actor, producer, director, and voiceover artist who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and Cornell University. He’s been playing tennis with Ron since he was a very young lad, and until last night, we had never had a chance to see him perform.

As Managing Director, one of three Founding Partners of Purpled Pheasant Productions, and one of the three actors to perform a comically abridged form of 37 Shakespearian plays at the Southampton Cultural Centre, we thoroughly enjoyed Ian’s performance, and that of his fellow actors, in this fun, fast-and-furious interpretation of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). This show first premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1987, became London’s second-longest-running comedy after a ten-year run, and has become one of the most frequently produced plays which has been performed in dozens of languages around the world.

It was very cool for us to watch Ian on stage. He is best known for his television series’ performances as Narrator of The Once and Future Nerd and as John Chamberlain in ABC’s Forever. He’s appeared in many plays throughout the US and Europe, including London’s West End, as well as in American Hustle, Boardwalk Empire, the Murdoch Mysteries, and The Knick (upcoming). His career is just starting to take flight and we will watch and follow his future success with great excitement and anticipation. Break a leg, Ian!

Ron and I had the tremendous pleasure last night of seeing Melissa Errico, actress and superb singer, in a one-woman show at the Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor entitled “Funny! I’m a Woman with Children…“. Ron had seen her perform here in the Hamptons previously, but I had only heard her CD entitled Legrand Affair which was a spectacular collaboration with Michel Legrand, one of Melissa’s lifetime musical idols.

I was excited to see her in person as I have met her husband, Patrick McEnroe, a number of times through our mutual friend, Monte. Melissa and Patrick share a loving twenty year marriage and they have three beautiful girls – all of whom Melissa talked about in the show with great love and devotion.

To see Melissa in person was an absolute gift: sharing her warm personality, the intimacy of her stories about dating, romance, falling in love, motherhood, the importance of her girlfriends, marriage, career challenges, and so much more. She is tremendously talented and, in the words of Stephen Holden of the New York Times, “Melissa has the power to take a sumptuous Broadway ballad to the moon and back!” Her selection of songs was spectacular and we’re hoping that she records them on a CD in the near future so that we can savor the lyrics, the music, and her beautiful voice over and over again.

Ungava – A Uniquely Canadian Product

Ungava – A Uniquely Canadian Product

My Mom and I were shopping for wine the other week and we were checking out what tequilas the store had in stock (my Mom LOVES tequila and together we toast every full moon with it, in person or by phone). The person in the store asked if we had tried Ungava Canadian Premium Gin (I know – how did we get from wine to tequila to GIN!). I love a gin and tonic when it’s really hot outside and had not yet tried this brand.

The simple and clean-cut Ungava bottle evokes the purity and chill of Arctic ice

The clerk at the liquor store was obviously very convincing as we ended up walking out with a bottle. We sat down to play a long awaited game or two of dominos that afternoon and poured ourselves a gin and tonic. I have to say that this gin, which I had put in the freezer so was ice cold when we made our drinks, was absolutely delicious. Ungava’s unusual bright yellow color and distinctive aroma are derived from six rare botanicals that are native to the Arctic region: Nordic juniper, wild rose hips, cloudberry, crowberry, Arctic blend and Labrador tea. These botanicals are handpicked and steeped in the traditional Inuit way and the result is a deliciously well-balanced, fragrant and delicious product.

Ungava gin recommends serving with a wedge of grapefruit on ice, but do be careful as it has a surprising alcoholic strength of 43.1%. We tried it with chilled tonic, with and without a squeeze of fresh lime, and preferred it without citrus as the flavours are so unique and balanced. Perfect for an ice-cold martini, this unique handcrafted gin is definitely worth searching out – even if you have to come to Canada to find it!

A Stampede Event to Remember!

A Stampede Event to Remember!

The annual and very famous Calgary Stampede wrapped up a week ago tonight. Soggy weather, the worst I can ever remember, and a depressed economy put a “damper” on the event and reduced attendance significantly this year – the lowest in 22 years.

Calgary is a city that is filled with people from all over the world. I’ve always joked and said that I’ve one of the six people who were actually born here. The other five people get REALLY excited about Stampede and I have to admit that I’ve grown really complacent over the years. Working downtown during this event is VERY difficult: between people out for the traditional pancake breakfasts first thing in the morning, long lunches where people don’t come back to the office until the next day, country music everywhere, and basically being an impossible time to get work done if you need to rely on other people. I know, I know, I sound like a real party pooper, but I have to say that until this year, I’ve seen that, been there, and done that! The event that I’m about to tell you about turned all that around for me.

Through one of the companies that I consult for, several co-workers and I received an invitation to an event that really piqued my interest. The event was called a The Spaghetti Western Networking Breakfast 2016, the “Unfamished”, sponsored by Geologic Systems for a select group of their system users, and catered at a gorgeous venue on Prince’s Island called River Café. This restaurant has long been a favourite of mine in Calgary as they feature “the best tasting local ingredients in season” in a beautiful restaurant in an extraordinary setting.

I have to be honest that it was the menu that captured my interest and inspired me to attend the event:

Fairwinds Farm Feta & Roast Tomato Frittata
Poplar Bluff Potato Rosti with Highwood Crossing Aioli
Croissant French Toast with Okanagan Cherries Bourbon Sabayon
Fresh Local Berries
Grilled Cheese with Maple Bacon Jam
Breakfast Flatbread with Wild Boar Bacon
Fior di Latte
Spragg’s Sausage
House Made Pastries with Saskatoon Berry Danish
Mountain Grana Scones
Gluten-Free Rhubarb White Chocolate Muffins
Highwood Crossing Shortbread Granola with Schipper’s Strawberries
Nino Franco Prosecco Island Fizz
Craft Cocktails
Iced Coffees
Rhubarb Lemonade

We were all met on the way to the restaurant by a friendly and welcoming team of people from Geologic Systems, all dressed in their signature red shirts, who made everyone feel instantly comfortable and set the stage for a brilliant networking (and culinary!) event. We were blessed with beautiful weather that morning, so the event was inside the restaurant as well as flowing out to their gorgeous outdoor patio areas.

Although there was a traditional buffet set up, most of us were engaged in conversations with industry peers and acquaintances, new and old, spread around the patio, being served bite-sized portions of the AMAZING food prepared and served by the professional and informative staff of River Café. The staff from Geologic Systems mingled with guests and everyone had, I believe, a great experience. THIS was the epitome of what a Stampede Breakfast should be – in every sense!

Geologic Systems, “a Calgary-based company that offers a data browser and analytical tools bundled with current well data for all of western Canada”, showed tremendous class through the planning and execution of this event. In a time when most companies are cutting WAY back, they reached out to their client base and put on an incredibly successful networking event for them and showed them REAL appreciation for their business.

I applaud Geologic Systems and their catering partner, River Café, for setting an absolute new and high standard of western hospitality and creating the ultimate Stampede breakfast! Kudos and congratulations to all!
